How to Keep Your Memory Sharp as You Age
Everyday habits that give your brain the exercise, rest and company it needs.

Walking into a room and forgetting why is something almost everyone does. As the years go by, many of us want to do what we can to keep our minds clear and quick. These everyday habits are a good place to start.
Move your body most days
Walking, gardening, swimming and dancing all get your blood flowing, and that includes blood flow to the brain. Aim for some movement most days, even if it's a brisk 20-minute walk.
Learn something new
Your brain loves a challenge. A new language, a musical instrument, a woodworking project or a course at the library gives it fresh work to do. The trick is choosing something a little hard, so you're stretching rather than repeating.
Stay connected with people
Conversation is a workout for the mind. Regular coffee with a friend, phone calls with family, church groups and volunteering all keep your thinking active and your spirits up.
Protect your sleep
While you sleep, your brain sorts and stores what you learned during the day. Good sleep habits are memory habits. Our guide to better sleep after 50 has seven simple ones to try.
Eat for your brain
Leafy greens, berries, nuts, olive oil, beans and fish show up again and again in brain-friendly eating patterns. You don't need a strict diet; adding more of these foods to the meals you already enjoy is a fine start.
Write it down
A small notebook or a calendar on the fridge takes pressure off your memory, so your mind is free for the things that matter. Many sharp people rely on lists.
